Insomnia is difficulty sleeping 7.5 hours or more every night. This could be due to pain, restlessness, nightmares, waking up for no reason, etc.
This sleep deprivation causes the body stress and the when the body is stressed, the adrenal glands make cortisol and adrenaline to keep energy levels up. Cortisol increases blood sugar, can elevate blood pressure and suppresses the immune system.
Why would the body do this? Because it is a short term fix for stress. If the stress is short lived, the body goes back into balance naturally.
If stress becomes long term, more than 1 week, the body doesn’t have a “fix” for this and cortisol and adrenaline will still be produced in larger amounts than is good for the body. This can lead to anxiety, brain fog, depression, heart disease, digestion problems, insomnia, weight gain and others.
The weight gained can only be lost after the body stops over-producing cortisol. But, once the body starts chronically over-producing this hormone, it can be very difficult to convince it to stop. Patients have suffered for years with high cortisol, and after testing them, have discovered that their weight gain was caused by hormones.
Thursday, September 15th, we will be talking about the options, testing people for cortisol levels, enjoying organic Sweet and Sour Meatballs and Snacks and chatting.
